Muhammad Iqbal, der Neckar und Goethe
Muhammad Iqbal war „einer der wenigen Denker (…), die nicht nur im Islam tief verwurzelt waren, sondern auch eine erstaunliche Kenntnis des europäischen und vor allem des deutschen Geisteslebens aufweisen“.So das Urteil der berühmten deutschen Orientalistin Annemarie Schimmel (1922-2003) über den bedeutsamen Denker und Dichter Muhammad Iqbal.
Wenn man in Heidelberg das Neckarufer entlang schlendert, wird man vielleicht auf ein in Stein gemeißeltes Gedicht stoßen. „Gruß an den Neckar“ lautet seine Überschrift, und es handelt von der Kraft der Ruhe. Das lyrische Ich veranschaulicht diese „Zaubermacht der Stille“, indem es die Naturbeschreibung dem eigenen Empfinden gegenüber stellt und in den letzten zwei Versen das individuelle Gefühl in den Vordergrund stellt, so wie zeitgenössische Literaten der Moderne es zu tun pflegen:
Still ist der Berg und der Fluss und das Tal,
Es scheint die Natur in Sinnen versunken.
Die gefiederten Sänger verstummten zumal,
Und der Wald an dem Hügel ruht schlummertrunken.
Die Karawane der Sterne zieht
Ohne Glöckchenklingen auf himmlischen Wegen.
Still leuchtet der Mond, die Bewegung entflieht,
Im Schosse der Nacht sich schlafen zu legen.
So stark ist der Stille Zaubermacht,
Dass der Neckar ruht, nicht weiterfliessend.
Nun sei auch Du stille, mein Herz, in der Nacht.
Und schlafe, das Leid in Dich verschliessend.
Dieses Gedicht stammt von dem pakistanischen Staatstheoretiker Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938). Weshalb schreibt ein solcher Mann einen „Gruß an den Neckar“, und was führte ihn überhaupt nach Deutschland?
