Woran erkennen wir hohe moralische Werte und rechtschaffene Menschen in der Gesellschaft, und weshalb verehren wir sie? Fragen wie diese haben die Köpfe von Intellektuellen schon immer beschäftigt und werden es auch in Zukunft tun.
Der folgende Beitrag erhebt nicht den Anspruch, allgemeingültige Antworten zu liefern, sondern fasst lediglich die Ergebnisse von zwei neuen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zusammen, die in den amerikanischen Zeitschriften Science und Nature erschienen sind. Es handelt sich um interessante Forschungen zur sozialen Ethik und moralischem Verhalten. Anschließend möchte ich es Ihnen, liebe Leserinnen und Leser, überlassen, Ihre eigenen Schlussfolgerungen daraus zu ziehen.
Der in der Zeitschrift Science veröffentlichte Artikel präsentiert eine Kette von Beweisen dafür, dass es uns glücklich macht, andere Menschen finanziell zu unterstützen. Der Nature-Artikel dagegen gelangt zu einer – vielleicht – noch überraschenderen Erkenntnis: Schon Kleinkinder, die noch nicht sprechen können, wissen soziales Verhalten zu schätzen und bevorzugen offenbar Menschen, die anderen helfen. Demnach spricht also einiges dafür, dass wir nicht nur glücklicher werden, wenn wir anderen Gutes tun, sondern uns auch zu Menschen hingezogen fühlen, die anderen Gutes tun – und das sogar bereits in frühester Kindheit.
